Painting of venice: oil on canvas

This is a beautiful and charming example of Venetian view painting, the artist made it on the spot. Every day life is the topic of this composition: the typical Venetian boats called gondolas are moored near the entrances of the houses, some people walk on the bridge while others overlook the balconies.Vincenzo Caprile chose not to paint one of the most frequented sites of the city but a canal away from the tourist district, at the same time he has captured all the charm of Venice with its beautiful architectural elements, the windows of the houses and the stone balconies overlooking the canal. This oil on canvas  is painted with a palette of very relaxing colors, the architectures in different shades of beige, orange and brown, full of little windows and balconies of gray stone are reflected in the green waters of the canal where the typical black boats are moored. The sky is a leaden gray and some spots of a brighter color like red and blue are given by the clothes of passers-by.Both the brushstroke and the colors work to create on the canvas a landscape with natural lights and shadows.

This painting of Venice is signed V. Caprile low right, housed in a gilt wood frame.  Excellent overall conditions, original canvas and patina, interesting and stable craquelé in some parts. Uniform and consistent surface. Soft and saturated colors.

Vincenzo Caprile was one of the most appreciated representatives of Realism, he began his artistic career in 1874 enrolling as a student in the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. There he studied under Gabriele Smargiassi (1798–1882) then with the most celebrated teacher and artist Domenico Morelli (1823–1901). Caprile soon abandoned the influence of these masters and finally he succeeded in elaborating his style: he oriented himself towards the Verism, his painting had a very poetic connotation, dealing with immediacy, refined painter looking at the chromatism and the composition.His debut at the Promoter of Turin in 1873 was a great success he obtained acclaim and recognition, since then he has participated in an exhibition in Naples and various international exhibitions. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale and in 1888 became an honorary professor of the Neapolitan Academy.He met fellow artists Vincenzo Irolli (1860–1949), Atillio Pratella (1856–1949), Francesco Paolo Michetti (1851–1929) and Edoardo Dalbono (1841–1915). Together with some of these artists Caprile decorated the halls of Caffè Gambrinus in Naples, a famous meeting place for artists and intellectuals from all over the world. Vincenzo Caprile was one of many artists from all over Europe to settle in Venice not only for the beauty of the city but also for commercial reasons. Indeed the demand for views of the city was highly popular and sought after by the newly enriched European bourgeoisie.
